Broward's school district holds its last town hall on the school tax referendum tonight — Wednesday, October 14, 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Monarch High School in Coconut Creek. Voters decide November 3 whether to renew the one-mill school property tax for four more years (January 2027 through December 2030).

This is a renewal, not a new tax: the district estimates the average Broward homeowner pays about $418 a year ($35 a month) and the average condo owner about $230 a year — similar to what owners pay now. The renewal would raise about $358 million a year, with 90% or more committed to pay supplements for teachers and eligible staff and the rest to school resource officers, safety staff and mental health services. District leaders say losing it would mean deeper cuts, with more school closures already under discussion as enrollment falls.

Why it matters: If you have kids in Broward schools or pay property tax here, this is the single biggest local question on your November ballot. Tonight's town hall is your last chance to hear it from the district directly; early voting runs October 19–November 1 and the vote-by-mail request deadline is October 22.
