Two Sunday deadlines arrive together this weekend. Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 1: set manual clocks back one hour before bed on Saturday night, and you gain an hour of sleep. Phones and most connected devices update themselves. Because November 1 is the first Sunday of the month, this is the earliest date the fall-back can occur. The push to end the twice-yearly change has not changed this year — the Sunshine Protection Act passed the House in July but has not passed the Senate, so standard time still returns.
Why it matters: an extra hour is no excuse to be late — early-voting lines on the final day are usually the longest of the season. Vote Sunday if you can, set the clocks Saturday night, and use the weekend to test your smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms while you are changing times around the house.
