The National Weather Service in Miami has extended the high rip current risk for coastal Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. The statement, issued at 12:39 PM on Saturday, October 17, takes effect late tonight and now runs through 8 PM Thursday, October 22, longer than the version issued early Saturday.

Dangerous rip currents are expected along South Florida's Atlantic beaches during this period. The Weather Service says rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.

Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float and do not swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
