OpenAI updated its ChatGPT Chrome extension on October 15 so the assistant can work directly with the tabs you already have open. Type "@Chrome" in the ChatGPT web or desktop app and it will gather information across those pages — OpenAI's demo shows it comparing three sofa listings by specs, price, and delivery details without any copy-pasting.
There are two modes: Chat reads across your tabs to answer questions, while Work mode takes actions — filling out forms, sending messages, downloading files, or organizing a cluttered tab bar. OpenAI says the upgrade arrives after its Atlas browser was shut down earlier this year, and works with Edge, Brave, Opera, and Vivaldi too.
The privacy trade-off: ChatGPT will see every page you have open, so users must trust OpenAI with that data. OpenAI says it asks permission before referencing browser history or managing downloads — keep the per-site approval on rather than granting blanket access.
