The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) says a malicious actor accessed certain department records on September 4, 2026, using compromised credentials. Its investigation, with the Florida Digital Service and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, found the data potentially affected includes driver license and motor vehicle records, document images and other personal information. The department says it has no evidence so far that the information has been misused.

FLHSMV is mailing letters this week to current driver license and ID card holders who may be affected, with one year of complimentary identity and credit monitoring from Sontiq, a TransUnion company, plus $1 million in identity theft insurance. Because it may not have current addresses for people who no longer hold a Florida license or ID, or who previously titled a vehicle in Florida, it issued a substitute public notice instead for that group.

Why it matters

That substitute-notice group is the gap to watch: if you once held a Florida license, ID or title and no letter arrives, FLHSMV says you can contact it at [email protected]. Either way, review account statements and credit reports, monitor financial accounts, and consider a free fraud alert or security freeze with the major credit bureaus.
