If you or your children have ever applied for Florida student financial aid, check your credit: the Florida Department of Education announced Thursday, October 29, that unauthorized criminal access to its Florida Student Financial Aid website may have exposed personal information, including Social Security numbers, of approximately 4.9 million people. Staff became aware of the breach on October 19, and the department believes it was limited to that one website, FloridaStudentFinancialAidSG.org.
The department says current financial aid is not at risk: disbursements and tuition payments will not be delayed, and eligibility for scholarships, grants and loans is unaffected. It has notified the Attorney General's Office and is working with state cybersecurity and law enforcement partners in a criminal investigation.
Why it matters: this portal holds data for years of Florida aid applicants, including many South Florida Malayalee students and parents. Monitor your bank and online accounts, review free reports at AnnualCreditReport.com, and consider a fraud alert or credit freeze with the major bureaus. FLDOE's breach page carries updates, and questions go to [email protected].
