The Federal Trade Commission is sending refund checks totaling more than $9.8 million to 65,022 consumers, the agency announced October 15. The payments go to people who completed eligible money transfers at Walmart between January 2015 and December 2024.
The refunds follow a June 2025 settlement of FTC charges that Walmart failed to put effective anti-fraud policies in place, did not properly train employees, and did not warn customers about fraud risks in its money-transfer services — failures the FTC says let scammers take hundreds of millions of dollars from U.S. consumers using those services.
Why it matters
Many South Florida families use store money transfers to send money to family in India and elsewhere, so a check could arrive in your mailbox without any application. If you receive one, cash it within 90 days, as printed on the check. Questions go to the refund administrator, Rust Consulting Inc., at 1-833-472-1990. The FTC never requires anyone to pay money or share account information to receive a payment — anyone who asks is running a scam.
