Federal food safety officials have issued a public health alert for canned Grace chicken Vienna-style sausages that were illegally imported from Jamaica — a country the US does not allow to export meat or poultry products. The cans were distributed to retailers in five states, including Florida.

The alert, issued October 6 by the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service, covers 140-gram cans of Grace Ready to Eat Chicken Vienna Sausages and the Hot & Spicy variety, regardless of product date. The affected cans bear establishment number EST. NO G-01 inside the Jamaican inspection mark — that is how you spot them.

No illnesses have been reported, and the alert is not a recall for contamination: the problem is that the product bypassed the inspection system that verifies foreign meat and poultry meet US safety standards. Because the cans are shelf-stable, they may already be sitting in home pantries. If you have them, do not eat them — throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.

Why it matters: Grace products are pantry staples in many Caribbean and South Asian households, and this alert's distribution area includes South Florida. A quick label check takes a minute and costs nothing.
